Teaching our kids the truths contained in God's Word is one of the most important things we will ever do as parents.
But how can we best do that?
I have seen time and again the benefits of memorizing scripture. I am a big proponent of scripture memory, both for ourselves and for our children.
I've seen a lot of great ideas posted on the web for doing memory verses with kids. Some of these programs have kids "learning" 5 or more verses per week.
I have a child who is a whiz at memory verses and always has been. He can hear a verse a couple of times and recite it just in time to show he's learned it. He could do that 5 times per week.
But has he really learned anything?
As I browsed through these ideas about how to get kids to learn the highest number of verses possible, and started seeing that theme of more, more, more, I started feeling convicted about my own motivation. Was I teaching my kids about Jesus in order to truly fill their little hearts and minds with His word, or was I anxious to show off how well they could memorize things?
THE IMPORTANCE OF COMPREHENSION
I noticed all of these memory systems focused on memorizing words, but not understanding them. For most children, memorizing 10 verses each week means that they are memorizing words, but probably not understanding them fully.
It's more important that our kids really learn Bible verses, than that they learn to recite Bible verses.
I am not suggesting that we stop memorizing verses with our kids. Instead, I'm suggesting that we go about it a bit differently and focus on quality over quantity. Instead of rushing through the verses, let's slow down a bit and make sure our children also understand the words and verses they are memorizing.
This also helps in retaining the information. Studies show that facts learned slowly over a period of time are retained far better than cramming.
I know that you, too, want your children to understand the promises and instructions found in God's word, which is why I'm so excited about this resource to help you.
